Site Maintenance NSOS Website Review

Intro to this session

Creating a web site doesn't take very long. Maintenance can take years and years.

What exactly is web site maintenance?

Web site maintenance tools, help the webmaster manage a web site.

These will Tools include

  1. an HTML validator,
  2. CSS validator,
  3. link checker,
  4. RSS Feeds,
  5. server monitor,
  6. DDA, Watchfire compliancy
  7. Other tools

To remain effective, a web site needs to be constantly updated and maintained for a number of reasons:

  1. Technology changes fast and a site can begin to look and act old very quickly.
  2. Changes in business, for example new products or prices.
  3. Components of a web site such as hyperlinks and graphics can malfunction. Dead links
  4. The rules by which search engines list sites change constantly. Without updating and taking account of these new rules, a web site can easily become 'lost' in search engine listings.
  5. Fresh information ensures people have a reason to return to your site.

Regular Checks should include

  1. Adding new page
  2. changing contents
  3. Adding/removing products in the shopping cart
  4. Posting news releases
  5. Adding/deleting email addresses
  6. 24/7 monitoring to make sure your website up at least 99.7% of the time.
  7. Using Valid XHTML and CSS etc
  8. Reading Age
  9. Meta Tag information Dublin Core
  10. 404 errors

Why document? You may well be able to do something today that you won't remember how to do in a month or a years time.

What add-on technologies could be used on this site?

What is meant by an add on technology. Something that doesn't work with a native browser. PDF and Flash are examples of these, but they are becoming mainstream and are currently being built into some browsers so are are not add-on technologies any more.
