Session 21 Lesson Plan

Hit counters and Advertising on the Web

Intro to this session

Hit counters provide part of the distinction criteria, so we will look at how to create them.

3 Mechanisms

1 - Borrow the code from sites such as www.hotscripts.com and andale

2 - Use 3rd party site like statcounter or sitemeter

3 - Create your own.

All mechanisms will be presented. It will be up to you to decide which is the best to put on your web site.

To display or not to display - the arguments.

Write down a minimum of 3 reasons for and 3 reasons against To Display Not to Display.

Which is correct?

I certainly don't know. Comment on the following

Why would you see a need for a counter to be displayed? What about the Colours of counters? What fonts could be used? Should a graphical counter be used?

3 - Coding it yourself, how to go about it.

What else can be done with a counter? Look at the results of the current NSOS site What other details can be obtained? What problems are there with DPA?

Advertising on the web - Does it attract or does it achieve the opposite results.
