Performance considerations


Internet browsers: should be used by learners to assess the changes in appearance of websites, depending on the code used to produce the pages. In a similar fashion, by use of examples, learners should be encouraged to assess web pages using different VDU screen sizes and resolution settings.


Download times: of web pages depending on the speed of internet/intranet connection and the size of the files downloaded from the site.


Internet/intranet connection types: ISDN, ADSL, telephone modem, Broadband, LAN

In this first session we are going to look at performance considerations. Answer all the following questions.

 

  1. Name 4 different Broadband providers? What are the different services they provide?
  2. What is the maximum speed of broadband?
  3. What speed does "average" broadband work at?
  4. Explain the difference - max and average?.
  5. What is the average contention ratio?
  6. What is the contention ratio?
  7. What is DSL?
  8. What is ADSL?
  9. What is the difference?
  10. What is the speed of a LAN for a "Home network"?
  11. Why can't these speeds be used on the internet?
  12. What does ISDN stand for? Give me 3 other choices? eg Information still dies needlessly
  13. What is the speed of ISDN?
  14. How fast is a Modem?
  15. How fast is a 56K modem?
  16. So now a difficult question - if all of these use a telephone line - why are they so different?
  17. A web page has the following information.
    The index page is 10K, it has 2 pictures , one at 38K and the other at 8K, it uses a style sheet of 1K and a logo of 1K that appears twice.
    How long will the file take to download using each of these technologies
    100Mb LAN? 512 Broadband ADSL? 2 line ISDN? a 56K Modem?
  18. How long would it take to upload via a 512 Broadband ADSL?
  19. If the screen resolution of the user is changed from 800x600 to 1024x768, what will be the download time difference using a 56K Modem?
