1 Multimedia system requirements
Basic terminology: microprocessor, Main Store (RAM), Level 1 and Level 2 cache memory, system bus (PCI, ISA, EISA), bus bandwidth, processor clock speed, backing store (hard disk, floppy disk, ZIP drive), virtual memory, disk cache, expansion slots
Multimedia components: optical storage (CD-Rom, CD-RW, DVD), sound cards, video cards, AGP, Monitors (CRT, Flat-screen TFT, pixel resolution, refresh rate)

2 Set up hardware and install software
Basic system peripherals: monitor, keyboard, mouse
Extra storage devices:
zip drive, second hard disk drive, CD writer
Multimedia devices: scanner, digital video camera, digital still camera, ‘web-cam’, video recorder, microphone, loudspeakers, touch-screens
Other devices: printer, modem
Documentation:
manuals, instructions
Establish connections:
to LAN, to the internet
Software: operating systems (eg Windows 9x, ME, 2000, XP, Linux), device drivers, applications, eg Macromedia Director, Flash, web browsers, web-page editors; browser plug-ins to view video, eg QuickTime, Shockwave, RealPlayer
Different platforms: Mac, PC, upgrade, custom install
Modify: extensions (install more RAM, faster graphics card, higher capacity and faster hard disk drive), preferences, application settings

3 Documentation
Testing procedures: design and test different scenarios, situations, diagnostics, test setup (hardware, software, memory allocations, options)
Fault logs: develop, produce, maintain


4 New technology
Hardware: latest developments (processor technology, clock speeds, RAM technology, storage capacity)
Software: latest developments, upgrades, getting free upgrades, service releases and bugfixes from websites
