BTec Nationals Unit 2 Computer Systems

Scenario

Using the Microcontroller simulator write a low level progam using three procedures. The first should read text from the keyboard and store it in RAM. The second should convert any upper case characters in the stored text to lower case. The third should display the text on the VDU screen. Use the Microcontroller simulator help to support you. You will need to supply an assembler file that will be able to be loaded by the Microcontroller simulator to show your working program. You will also need to supply a fully commented source code on paper.(P6,M4)

Write a report, with the aid of diagrams, describing in detail the function of the fetch, decode - execute cycle, and its relationship to the workings of a microprocessor. Make detailed reference to the role played by hardware (including logic gates, registers, buses, Control Unit, ALU and memory) and software in this relationship. (M2,D1)

Grading Criteria

P6 write very basic program functions (such as fetching and adding together two numbers, and storing the result) in a low level language.

M2 describe, with the aid of diagrams, the hardware (including logic gates, registers, buses, Control Unit, ALU and memory) and its function within a model microprocessor

M4 design and write programs in a low level programming language which include data transfer, arithmetic, jump and branch instructions.

D1 Describe in detail the function of the fetch, decode- execute cycle and its relationship to the workings of a microprocessor, making detailed reference to the role played by hardware and software in this relationship
