Course Guide

This course is a comprehensive introduction to the basics of computer networking and telecommunications principles The course covers the skills and knowledge typical of the networking sector, in which an ICT network technician would need to understand to successfully complete their work. In particular learners will be taught how to attach a computer to a network system, complete copper cabling, devise a subnet scheme, plan and recommend improvements to a network infrastructure and also be able to troubleshoot simple communication problems with networking hardware. In addition to this, learners will understand and apply commonly used networking technologies in a variety of contexts.
In most organisations, it is accepted that network management is essential in order to run support systems efficiently and effectively. Learners will appreciate what takes place in the daily operation of a network and how differing systems interact with each other.
This course involves hands-on, lab-oriented activities that stresses laboratory safety and working effectively in a group environment. Theory aspects are studied and tested online using Cisco’s own electronic curriculum which learners may also access from home. The course is delivered through a blended learning approach where tutor led teaching is combined with the electronic materials and testing.
As a B/TEC National learner, your experience will be enhanced by the merit and distinction activities in addition to the CCNA1 Discovery Networking for home and Small Business assessment offered by the Cisco Academy Programme.
This unit will fully prepare learners to sit the Cisco Networking for Home and Small Businesses (CCNA1 Discovery) certification and in addition (when completing Discovery 2,3 and 4) it will help you prepare for globally recognised CCNA professional certification.
This unit is assessed via the Cisco Networking for Home and Small Businesses (CCNA1 Discovery) online examination with extension criteria for Merit and Distinction grading.
To view general information about the Cisco Networking for Home and Small Businesses (CCNA1 Discovery) objectives please visit http://www.cisco.com/web/learning/netacad/course_catalog/CCNA.html
The detailed scope and sequence documents are available to academies on the Cisco internal site.
